Productivity Over Perfection: My Home Basement Consulting Lab

A practical three-desk, five-system workspace built around daily productivity, consulting, Intune remote help, macOS validation, company work, reliable networking, and continued learning.

The Workspace Is Not About the Latest and Greatest

When people hear the phrase home technology lab, they may picture server racks, blinking lights, high-end gaming towers, enterprise networking gear, and a room full of equipment that looks like it belongs in a data center.

That is not what my basement workspace is about.

My basement workspace and technology laboratory is built around a much more practical philosophy: use the right tools, conserve space, keep systems reliable, and make the environment comfortable enough to work in every day.

Most of my systems are laptops, micro form factor desktops, or mini PCs. They are paired with good screens, comfortable input devices, practical cameras, backup power, and enough separation to support different types of work without turning the room into a hardware museum.

The result is a workspace with three desks, five systems, and four primary working environments. It supports daily work, consulting, Intune remote help, macOS testing, company work, writing, research, ongoing technical learning, and a home network designed to make all of that practical.

The Design Philosophy: Space, Comfort, Separation, and Connectivity

There are four ideas behind the way the room is arranged.

  • Space conservation: Micro desktops, mini PCs, and laptops keep the workspace usable without requiring full-size towers everywhere.
  • Comfortable daily use: Good displays, ergonomic keyboards, ergonomic mice, webcams, and sensible desk layouts matter when the workspace is used every day.
  • Separation of work: Different systems support different roles, which keeps environments cleaner and makes testing and consulting work easier to manage.
  • Reliable connectivity: Each desk needs dependable Ethernet-style access, even in a basement workspace where running traditional wired drops everywhere may not be practical.

Instead of building one oversized machine to do everything, I prefer a few compact systems assigned to specific roles. That approach better reflects the way I actually work.

Desk 1: 32-Inch 4K Daily Driver and Intune Remote Help Desk

The first desk is built around a 32-inch LG 4K monitor with multiple inputs. It also includes a Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard, Microsoft Ergonomic Mouse, Microsoft LifeCam Studio camera, USB switching, and an APC 650VA battery backup.

This desk has two systems behind one practical daily workspace.

The first system is my daily driver: a Dell OptiPlex 7070 with a Core i7-9700T processor, 16 GB of RAM, and a 256 GB SSD. This is used for day-to-day productivity, Microsoft 365 administration, writing, research, communications, and general work.

The second system is my Intune Remote Support Help System, an Intel NUC 11th Gen Core i5-1135G7 with 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD. That system supports private consulting work and remote support activity.

Putting both systems at the same desk makes sense because this is the most frequently used work area. The large 4K monitor and USB switching make it easy to move between daily productivity and remote support tasks without needing a separate large desk for each role.

Desk 2: Dual Stacked 29-Inch Consulting and Mac Lab Desk

The second desk is arranged around dual stacked LG 29-inch UltraWide monitors with multiple inputs. It also includes a Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard, Microsoft Ergonomic Mouse, Microsoft LifeCam Studio camera, Synology DiskStation DS720+, HP LaserJet multifunction printer, and APC 850VA battery backup.

This desk also has two systems, but they serve different lab-style purposes.

The first system is the Consulting Workstation: a Dell OptiPlex 3080 with a Core i5-10500T processor and 24 GB of RAM. This environment supports consulting work, customer-oriented administration, configuration review, documentation, and focused project work.

The second system is the Mac Lab Workstation: an Apple Mac Mini M1 with 16 GB of RAM and a 256 GB SSD. This gives me a dedicated space for macOS validation, Apple ecosystem testing, Microsoft 365 behavior on macOS, and cross-platform endpoint considerations.

The Synology DiskStation DS720+ sits in this part of the workspace as my Microsoft 365 tenant backup device. It reinforces an important point: even in cloud-native environments, backup, retention, recovery thinking, and operational discipline still matter.

Desk 3: Side-by-Side 29-Inch Company PC Workstation

The third desk is the company PC workstation. It uses dual LG 29-inch UltraWide monitors positioned side by side, a Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard, Microsoft Ergonomic Mouse, Logitech camera, and APC 650VA battery backup.

The system here is a Lenovo ThinkPad with a Ryzen 7 Pro processor, 32 GB of RAM, and a 14-inch display.

This desk is intentionally separate from the consulting and personal lab systems. A company-managed laptop has its own purpose and should remain aligned with that purpose. Keeping it on its own desk helps maintain a clean boundary between company work, consulting work, personal lab activity, and daily productivity.

The Network Behind the Lab

A workspace with multiple desks and systems is only useful if the network is reliable. As part of the lab, my home network uses a Netgear Orbi mesh system with Ethernet-capable satellites placed at the desks.

Each desk has an Orbi satellite that provides local Ethernet connectivity for the systems at that workstation. That means the desktops, mini PCs, laptop dock, backup device, and other wired devices can connect through Ethernet at the desk instead of depending only on each device's individual wireless adapter.

The satellites connect back through the Orbi wireless backhaul, which gives the desks a faster and more stable path than standard client wireless for this kind of setup. It is a practical compromise: I get Ethernet capabilities at each desk without having to treat the basement like a full structured cabling project.

This network design fits the same philosophy as the rest of the lab. It is not about making the most elaborate possible home network. It is about giving each work area dependable connectivity so consulting work, remote support, backups, updates, Teams calls, cloud administration, and lab testing are not limited by weak wireless at the endpoint.

The Four Working Environments

The physical layout includes three desks and five systems, but from a working perspective the setup is designed around four primary environments.

  • Daily Driver and Intune Remote Help: The main 32-inch 4K desk for everyday productivity and remote support activity.
  • Consulting Workstation: A dedicated compact Windows workstation for focused consulting work and customer-oriented tasks.
  • Mac Lab: A dedicated Apple Mac Mini environment for macOS testing, cross-platform validation, and Apple-related endpoint scenarios.
  • Company PC: A separate company-managed laptop workstation for employer-provided work.

This design gives me practical separation without unnecessary complexity. The space is organized enough to reduce friction, but flexible enough to support different projects and workflows.

Why Good Screens Matter More Than New Computers

If there is one area where I think the right investment pays off, it is displays.

A compact business desktop that is several years old can still feel very productive when attached to a good monitor. A 32-inch 4K display or dual UltraWide monitors can make administrative work, documentation, research, and troubleshooting much easier because less time is spent switching windows.

For consulting work, screen real estate matters. It allows me to keep admin portals, documentation, notes, Teams, remote sessions, and browser tabs visible in a way that supports the work instead of getting in the way.

Networking Matters More Than It Gets Credit For

Displays and input devices are easy to notice, but the network often determines whether a home lab actually works well day to day.

Remote support, Microsoft 365 administration, tenant backup, cloud portal work, Teams meetings, macOS testing, Windows updates, and file movement all depend on stable connectivity. The Orbi mesh satellites give each desk a local Ethernet point while still using the flexibility of the mesh wireless backhaul.

That setup keeps the workspace cleaner and more reliable than relying entirely on endpoint Wi-Fi adapters. It also allows each desk to operate more like a small wired workstation pod, which is exactly what I need in a compact basement lab.

Comfortable Input Devices Are Part of the Architecture

Across the desks, a consistent theme is comfortable input. Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboards and Microsoft Ergonomic Mice appear repeatedly throughout the workspace.

That is not accidental. When you spend long hours typing documentation, reviewing configurations, joining calls, managing portals, and supporting customers, comfort becomes part of productivity.

A faster processor does not help much if the workspace is uncomfortable after a few hours. Good keyboards, good mice, good monitors, predictable desk layouts, and reliable network access are all part of the design.

Why I Prefer Several Small Systems

I could consolidate much of this into one large workstation, but that would not match the way I prefer to work.

Several compact systems give me clean separation. They allow me to keep consulting work separate from company work, keep macOS validation separate from Windows-focused tasks, and keep remote support activity available without disturbing my daily driver.

That separation is especially helpful in Microsoft 365, Intune, Entra ID, Defender, SharePoint, Power Platform, and endpoint management work. Real environments are mixed. A practical lab should reflect that.

The Lab Is Really About Learning

The hardware is useful, but it is not the real point of the lab.

The real value is that the space gives me a place to test, validate, document, learn, troubleshoot, and think. It supports certification study, consulting projects, blog writing, research, remote support, and personal technical exploration.

For me, a home lab is not about showing off equipment. It is about having a reliable place to practice the work.

Final Thoughts

My basement workspace is not built around the newest hardware. It is built around practical systems that help me get work done.

The final design is simple: three desks, five systems, four primary working environments, and a Netgear Orbi mesh network that gives each desk Ethernet capability through satellite units. Each area has a purpose. Each system has a role. The monitors, keyboards, mice, cameras, storage, backup power, and network connectivity all support the larger goal of making the workspace usable every day.

It helps me consult. It helps me support customers. It helps me write. It helps me test. It helps me keep learning.

And most importantly, it proves that a useful technology laboratory does not have to be built from the latest and greatest hardware. Sometimes the best workspace is the one carefully designed around how you actually work.
